Huckabee Promoted Quarantining AIDS Victims
December 9, 2007

During his 1992 campaign for the U.S. Senate, Mike Huckabee advocated putting AIDS patients in quarantine.  He now defends those comments as the result of a lack of information about the disease, saying “There was still a great deal of, I think, uncertainty about just how widespread AIDS was, how it could be transmitted.”  But in 1988, President Ronald Reagan’s Surgeon General, C. Everett Koop sent a brochure to Americans about AIDS, which explained "No matter what you may have heard, the AIDS virus is hard to get and is easily avoided. You won't just catch AIDS like a cold or flu because the virus is a different type. The AIDS virus is transmitted through sexual intercourse, the sharing of drug needles or to babies of infected mothers before or during birth."  Most Americans understood Koop’s warning.  In an April 1991 Harris poll, only 14 percent of Americans agreed with Huckabee’s position that AIDS patients should be quarantined "to keep them away from the general public" while 85 percent disagreed.

Huckabee’s Parole Problem
December 8, 2007

The presidential campaign of former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee is fighting to explain Huckabee’s controversial role in the parole of a convicted rapist who murdered a woman after his early release from prison.  Wayne Dumond was convicted and sentenced to life plus 20 years in prison for kidnapping and raping a 17-year old girl in 1984.  Huckabee denies advocating an early release of Dumond, but Huckabee wrote a letter to Dumond in 1997 saying “My desire is that you be released from prison.”  In addition, three members of the Arkansas state parole board claim that Huckabee pressured them to give Dumond an early release from prison.  Dumond’s innocence was championed by Huckabee’s friend Jay Cole, an Arkansas pastor who claimed Dumond had been “born again.”  Other supporters of Dumond claimed he had been railroaded because Dumond’s victim was a distant cousin of Bill Clinton.
